31 Days of Random Questions – Day 21

What is something most people appreciate?
Most people like to be respected. I think people perceive respect in different ways, though. For example, listening when someone speaks can communicate that I respect them.

31 Days of Random Questions – Day 20

What’s one wish you hope comes true?
I reallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreallyreally want to be “the cool aunt.” My new baby nephew, Eli, has five aunts though, so the competition may be fierce. (I don’t have any other nieces or nephews yet.)

31 Days of Random Questions – Day 19

How would you describe your family in one word?
Lively! We are an active, almost-never-bored*, story-telling, teasing bunch. At gatherings with the extended family, the party starts when we arrive. We got a little livelier yesterday when my sister had a healthy baby boy! Eli is my parents’ first grandkid and, boy, are we all glad he is here!

*Bored was a bad word when we were growing up. Mom used to tell us, “There are no such things as boring places, only boring people. If you’re bored, you must be a boring person…”

31 Days of Random Questions – Day 18

What’s something you would do more often if you had the time?
I would play the piano more. I am definitely not talented at music or rhythm but my mom believed her father’s philosophy that skill at any of the arts can be taught. I took lessons from an excellent and very patient teacher from ages 11-19, only stopping because piano lessons no longer fit into my class schedule. I still play occasionally but would love to practice more often.

What is one thing you hope to change?
I am looking forward to changing my job someday. I am currently an accountant but will finish my M.A. in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL). I would love to teach English to college students or adults.

31 Days of Random Questions – Day 16

What skill or ability has always come easily for you?
Organizing. According to my parents, I was born organized and they have no idea why. They tell stories about how, as a small child, I used to line my toys up according to size, shape, color, function. When I was five or six, I found my mom’s handful of personal organization books and proceeded to read all of them. I may have been the only elementary student in the world with my own filing system, card file, and personal organization notebook. No, I am not OCD and everything does not have to be perfect, but I do enjoy order and planning.

31 Days of Random Questions – Day 15

What’s one simple way to make life less complicated?
Tell the truth as diplomatically and graciously as possible. That way I have only one “story” to keep track of and people can trust me to be honest without being harsh.

What are the two best live performances (of any kind) you have ever seen?
Several years ago, I saw Phantom of the Opera as part of the touring Broadway series that comes to Tulsa. It was even more hauntingly beautiful than the movie, which is one of my favorites.

As a part of the same Broadway series, I also saw Wicked. Defying Gravity at the end of the first act was the most visually and aurally magical live performance I have seen.

What do you like on your pizza?
My favorite toppings are Canadian bacon and pineapple. When we make pizza for a crowd at my parents’ house, we usually make 4-6 pizzas. Since the oven only holds three, we cook them in shifts. My mom and I both like the Canadian bacon and pineapple, so we save that one to cook at the end so that all the hungry people who don’t appreciate it like we do will fill up on the first pizzas and leave more of our favorite for us. Opportunistic? Sure, but we do announce which pizzas are still coming, so those who choose can save room.

What is a song that always makes you smile?
Built to Last by Heartland; it has a pretty melody and the lyrics remind me of my grandparents who will celebrate their 65-year anniversary in November. The chorus goes:

Here’s to the makers of things built to last
Like church bells and bridges, and baseball on grass
Like Ferguson tractors and Lucchese boots
My daddy’s old tools I still use
The pledge of allegiance, the stars and the stripes
The words in the Bible, the sun in the sky
And here’s to the twinkle in old married eyes
Still there after fifty years past
Here’s to the makers of things built to last
